Can the R36S play PSP?

by Author on Nov 16, 2024

Understanding PSP Emulation Requirements

The PlayStation Portable (PSP) is a relatively powerful handheld console released by Sony in 2004. It features a 333 MHz MIPS R4000-based CPU, 32 MB of RAM (upgraded to 64 MB in later models), and a GPU capable of rendering 3D graphics. Unlike older retro systems, the PSP's hardware can handle complex 3D games with textures, shaders, and higher resolutions.

Emulating PSP games requires a device with decent processing power and a compatible GPU to handle the graphical demands. Popular PSP emulators like PPSSPP are optimized to run on a wide range of devices, from PCs to Android phones, and typically require at least a dual-core processor and 1 GB of RAM for smooth performance.

R36S Specifications for PSP Emulation

The R36S is powered by an ARM Cortex-A53 quad-core processor and comes with 2GB of RAM. While this hardware is decent for running less demanding retro games from the NES, SNES, and Game Boy Advance, it also meets the minimum requirements for PSP emulation.

The R36S’s 5-inch IPS screen with a resolution of 854 x 480 pixels provides a suitable display for PSP games, which typically run at 480 x 272 pixels. This means that the R36S can display PSP games at their native resolution or slightly higher, preserving the visual quality.

Performance Analysis

Based on user feedback and technical specifications, the R36S can handle PSP games, but performance will vary depending on the specific game:

  • Lightweight PSP Games: The R36S should run most 2D PSP games and less demanding 3D titles relatively smoothly. Games like Patapon, LocoRoco, or Lumines should work well on the R36S with minimal issues.
  • Graphically Intensive PSP Games: More demanding games like God of War: Chains of Olympus or Gran Turismo might be playable on the R36S but could experience frame rate drops, occasional graphical glitches, or audio sync issues. Performance will depend on the emulator settings and any optimizations applied.

Optimizing PSP Emulation on the R36S

To get the best performance from the R36S when playing PSP games, consider the following tips:

  1. Use the PPSSPP Emulator: PPSSPP is the most popular and efficient PSP emulator, offering a range of settings to optimize performance on lower-end devices like the R36S.
  2. Adjust Graphics Settings: Lowering the resolution, disabling anti-aliasing, and reducing texture scaling can help improve frame rates.
  3. Enable Frameskip: Enabling frameskip can reduce lag in more demanding games, though it may slightly affect visual smoothness.
  4. Turn Off Unnecessary Background Processes: Ensure that no other applications or processes are running in the background to maximize the device's resources for emulation.

Conclusion

Yes, the R36S can play PSP games, but the performance will vary based on the game's complexity. For lighter, less demanding PSP titles, the R36S should offer a satisfactory experience. However, for graphically intensive games, expect some limitations such as frame rate drops or occasional glitches.

Definitely recommended. The construction is good and the button feels nice to press. I was surprised that the screen protector came with it, but it was a pleasant surprise. The speaker volume is loud and it starts up, and it's frustrating to have to reset the settings every time. The manual is difficult to read in Chinese, but thankfully there are users online who have translated it into Japanese. I'm a little touched that it can emulate PS and PSP without any problems. The movement is not bad either. The slow startup is your fault. The brightness, vividness, and detail of the screen are impeccable. Even with this LCD with a viewing angle of 179 degrees, you can tell it's of high quality. Overall, it is a highly cost-effective product that I can recommend.

Very good retro console for retro gaming lovers, nothing to complain about for now. The only problem that only concerns me is that there aren't many Nintendo DS games for 128GB, a bit expensive. I would have given 5 stars if there were all the Pokémon games for Nintendo DS (only Pokémon Diamond and Pokémon Black Version), but it's still worth 5 stars. Lovers of retro games, go for it!

Likes:
1. A ton of games
2. Decent battery life
3. Big screen
4. Case is decent quality

Dislikes:
1. A bunch of the games don’t load
2. It has no built in wifi to update the OS. You have to go to a separate site, figure out which startup screen your system is, and correlate it to which link you use to dowload the updated OS to an sd/tf card that you then put into the system.
3. The buttons inputs don’t release. You’ll push right on the d-pad and it mechanically releases, but the game still reads that you are pushing that direction.
4. I’ve reached out a few times to customer support and haven’t received anything other than a review request. Customer service is half the star rating when I choose to review a product. Update: they responded and said to try a different emulator setting for the games that don’t work. They couldn’t help with the other issues I brought up.
5. Speaker is a bit tinny.
