The R36MAX in Hand

What the R36MAX Square Screen Actually Changes.

One design decision shapes everything about how this console plays. Here is what it means in practice.

Handheld Games Finally Fill the Screen

The R36MAX panel is 4.0 inches at 720 × 720 — perfectly square. Game Boy, Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance screens are close to square themselves, so those games sit far larger here than on a widescreen handheld. Vertical arcade boards, the Galaga and Donkey Kong cabinets, get exactly the same benefit.

Console Games Sit in a Letterbox — On Purpose

We would rather say this up front. SNES, Mega Drive and PS1 are 4:3, so on a square display they play with bars above and below. The picture is still generous, and most people stop noticing within an hour — but if 16-bit consoles are the only thing you play, a 4:3 handheld is the better shape for you.

Proven Silicon, Not Marketing Numbers

The R36MAX runs a Rockchip RK3326 quad-core with Mali-G31 graphics and 1GB of RAM. It is not the fastest chip in handhelds and we will not pretend it is. What it does do is run everything up to and including most of the PS1 library without stutter, on a battery that lasts, which is what this console is for.

Two Card Slots and a Real Battery

4000mAh gives around six hours and takes roughly two to fill. Two microSD slots mean the supplied card stays where it is while your own collection goes in the second — no swapping, no reflashing, and up to 512GB in each.

The real reason

Nobody Finished Those Games the First Time Either.

You had the cartridge, you had about forty minutes after school, and you never once saw the ending. The games were not the problem — the time was. That has not changed much, but the barrier has: the console is in a loft, the TV has no ports for it, and setting it up is a Saturday you do not have.

The R36MAX skips all of that. It arrives working, the library is already sorted by system, and it switches on in the time it takes to sit down.

Fits your actual day

Twenty Minutes Is Enough With This One.

This is not a console you plan an evening around. The R36MAX lives in a bag or a coat pocket and comes out on a train, in a waiting room, on the sofa while something dull is on. Suspend a game mid-level, put it away, pick it up on Thursday exactly where you left it.

Six hours of battery means a week of commutes between charges rather than a nightly ritual with a cable. That is the difference between a handheld you use and one you meant to use.

Out of the box

Switch It On. That Is the Setup.

The card is flashed, tested and sorted by system before it leaves us. Charge the R36MAX, power it on, pick a console, pick a game. Nothing to download, no firmware to flash, no forum thread to follow at midnight.

When you do want to go further, it is all standard underneath — Linux firmware, ordinary microSD cards, a folder for each system. Add your own games whenever you like, or never. Both are fine.

A gift that means it

The Present That Gets Played at the Table.

It is very hard to buy for someone in their thirties or forties. An R36MAX lands because it is specific: not a gadget, but the exact games they had, in a shape they can hold, working straight out of the wrapping.

What actually happens is that somebody finds a game they had forgotten existed, and then it gets passed round the room. That is a considerably better result than a polite thank you and a drawer.

I'm actually quite impressed with this little game unit. It's good quality. Bright clear ips screen. Most of the games work great. Just like the old games but run better.and smoother. Only down fall is the built-in speakers very bad low crackling sound. Heads phones not much better. Over all good unit. 3 stars only because speaker is so bad.

Very excellent

Great product, loved all the extras that came with it. Works well, seems to be based off similar software to the retropie emulators. Only a handful of psx games, mostly older generation games and system emulators. Loving the nostalgic value, a must have for millennials.

Original console, works very well under ARKOS.

Only question: what can i use the otg jack for? Usb-c-to-hdmi?

I like this r36max even better than my old game boy. I am 76 years old but enjoy still these kind of machines. You need to read the manuals carefully for the right tricks. But it is worth the effort. Much fun. I do recommend this machine and the good seller.
